First step? Stop telling yourself you can’t get shit done.
You want to know why you haven't been able to get shit done? Because you keep telling yourself you can't get shit done! Or, that you're just an over-thinker. Or that you're a procrastinator. You know that's all bullshit, right?
You're probably like no, really. Look at all of this proof that I have that I'm those things. You're just showing me stuff you've done in the past when you were calling yourself an over-thinking procrastinator! I am not swayed. my friend. I could point to a bunch of crap in my past, too. It doesn't mean shit. You aren't a statue. You can change. AND It doesn't require this massive overhaul of effort. You know what it requires?
You to stop feeding yourself bullshit thoughts. That's it. If your'e anything like me, you probably just told yourself, no, can't be that easy. This lady is nuts.
But.
Have you done it? I mean, actually done the work of ignoring your old BS thoughts and believed new thoughts that actually help you get shit done? I don't mean tried it for a 1/2 day and gave up because you believed the other BS thoughts more. Were you committed to staying on Conquer the Day Court when it was bumpy as hell? Did you refuse to allow yourself to turn on to Procrastinator Story Road even though it's lined with comfort? I'm going to guess no. We aren't taught these skills in school. You probably don't know how to yet.
We want it to be all complicated and tricky and make it mean we're fundamentally flawed because it means we get to stay comfortable and never change because, "this is just the way I am."
Listen.
You can be right. But you're just going to keep getting the same results you've always gotten.
What if I'm right? What if you're not flawed. What if you really can change? Go with me here, what if it could be easy to change? What then?
First, you've got to be aware of what you're telling yourself and understand that if it's leading to the result of you not getting stuff done, it's bullshit. Second, decide what it is that you want to think about you and your day. That you're a badass who does what she says she's going to do? Awesome. Doesn't matter what it is as long as it's being KIND to yourself and it servces you. Your results will never lie. Don't tell me, "but it isn't true." No thought is more true than another. You're just practied at thinking the bullshit. That's all.
Next, Give this a try:
1. Write down the top 3 things you want to get done today and then zoom out to get a bird’s eye view:
Ask: Does this move the needle on my goal? If not, choose again. Also, if you don't have a goal or anything in mind. Stop right here. You've gotta get clear on where you want to go before you can know what to do. You don't buy a plane ticket to Alaska when you're trying to go to New York, my friends.
2. Decide.
How long are you going to give yourself to get it done TODAY? Not tomorrow. Today. Pick a length of time. Don’t tell yourself I don’t know. Decide and stick to it. What will you have created by the end of that time? Commit to having it done, no matter what.
Side note: If you picked bigger projects and it’s 7pm. Go back to step one. Ask: What can I do that moves the needle TODAY?
3. Put it in your calendar or decide what time you’re going to start each activity. Turn off all distractions. Give 100% - if you do, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish when you're not distracted and not beating yourself up with garbage thoughts.
